Water Damaged Phone? What to Do (and What NOT to Do)

It happens fast — a splash at the pool, a dropped phone in the sink, a sudden downpour on the way through Rochdale town centre. Summer is peak season for water-damaged phones, and what you do in the first hour makes all the difference. Here's the honest advice we give customers every week at our shop.

First Things First: Switch It Off

If your phone has taken a dunking, turn it off immediately and leave it off. Water itself doesn't destroy a phone — electricity flowing through wet components does. Every second the phone stays powered on, you risk short circuits that turn a cheap fix into a dead phone.

Take the case off, remove the SIM tray, and if you can, dry the outside with a clean cloth. Tilt the phone so water can drain out of the charging port and speaker grilles. Don't shake it hard — that just pushes water deeper inside.

The Rice Myth (Please Don't)

We have to say it: putting your phone in rice doesn't work. It's the most common thing customers tell us they tried, and it usually makes things worse. Rice absorbs almost none of the moisture inside the phone, but it does buy time for corrosion to set in — and rice dust and starch can clog the charging port on top of it.

The same goes for hairdryers and radiators. Heat can warp seals, damage the battery, and drive moisture further into the phone. If you want to do something at home, leave the phone off in a dry, airy spot — but honestly, the clock is ticking either way.

Why Speed Matters More Than Anything

The real killer with water damage isn't the water — it's corrosion. Minerals in the water start attacking the circuit board within hours, and once corrosion takes hold, components that survived the dunking begin to fail one by one. A phone that "seems fine" after drying out can die weeks later for exactly this reason.

That's why we tell people: don't wait to see if it sorts itself out. A proper water damage treatment — opening the phone, cleaning the board with specialist solution, drying it correctly — has a far better success rate in the first 24 to 48 hours than it does a week later.

What a Repair Shop Actually Does

Manufacturers also don't cover water damage under warranty — even on "water resistant" phones. Treat the rating as a safety net, not an invitation.
