The rear camera sits proud of the phone body under a small glass window, so it takes first contact when a phone lands face up. Inside, optical stabilisation suspends the lens on tiny springs and magnets, brilliant for steady shots and fragile in a fall. Front cameras suffer less from drops and more from moisture creeping in near the earpiece. And when a photo has the same soft blurry patch in every shot, that is nearly always dust or a fingerprint of moisture behind the lens glass rather than a failed camera.
How We Fix It at the Shop
Lens glass replacement starts at £25 and full camera modules are priced per model, quoted before we start.
First we establish whether the fault is the outer lens glass, the camera module or just contamination between them, because the prices differ a lot and plenty of phones only need the cheap part. Replacements are fitted and then tested properly: focus near and far, stabilisation, flash, portrait mode and video on every lens. Almost certainly the stabiliser magnets, yes. Photos will be getting steadily worse. A module swap ends both the rattle and the blur.
