The touch sensor is a fine grid bonded inside the screen sandwich, and it fails three ways: torn by impact even without visible cracks, corrupted by moisture bridging its connections, or disturbed at the connector by a drop or a previous repair. One less obvious cause we see regularly at the counter: cheap petrol-station chargers. Their noisy power output interferes with touch sensing, and the phone goes haywire only while plugged in. That one costs the price of a decent cable to fix, and we will happily tell you so.
