5 Signs Your Phone Has Water Damage (And What to Do Immediately)

Water damage is one of the most damaging things that can happen to a smartphone, and it does not always announce itself immediately. Your phone might seem fine straight after getting wet, only to develop problems hours or even days later. Here are the top signs that your phone has water damage, and what you should do about it.

1. Your Phone Stopped Working After Contact With Liquid

If your phone got wet and then stopped turning on, water damage is the most likely cause. Even phones with IP water resistance ratings can suffer internal damage from submersion or exposure to liquids other than clean water, such as drinks, seawater or rainwater.

The most important thing to do is switch the phone off immediately if it is still on. Do not attempt to charge it. Bring it to us as soon as possible for a professional assessment.

2. The Liquid Damage Indicator Has Changed Colour

iPhones and many Android phones contain a small Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) inside the SIM card tray. In its normal state it is white or silver. If it turns red or pink, water has entered the device. You can check this by removing the SIM card tray and looking inside the slot with a torch.

3. Your Phone Is Making Strange Sounds

Muffled audio, crackling from the speaker, or microphone issues can all be caused by water inside the speaker or microphone housing. Even a small amount of moisture in these areas can cause noticeable audio problems that worsen over time if not addressed.

4. Your Screen Has Condensation or Discolouration

If you can see condensation under your screen, dark patches, or colour distortion on the display, this is a sign that moisture has reached the LCD or OLED panel. This type of damage often gets worse over time as the moisture spreads and corrodes display components.

5. Your Phone Is Charging Intermittently

Water in the charging port can cause charging to become unreliable or stop working altogether. If your phone charges sometimes but not others, or if it is giving you a liquid detected warning, moisture in the charging port is the most likely culprit.
